Rise Ye Sunken Ships è il primo album dei We Are Augustines, o anche il secondo album dei Pela.
Il leader Billy McCarthy e Eric Sanderson infatti facevano parte di quest'altro col gruppo col quale hanno anche registrato buona parte del materiale di Rise Ye Sunken Ships. Però il risultato non li soddisfò per niente così congedarono i vecchi compagni, assoldarono il batterista Rob Allen e ri-registrarono tutto. E fecero bene. Provate infatti ad ascoltare Anytown Graffiti, il primo album dei Pela, scoprireste un album con molti punti di contatto col lavoro dei We Are Augustines ma con un'efficacia decisamente inferiore, meno denso di musica, meno impattante nei suoni e nelle dinamiche. Questo a conferma che meno si è meglio è (tranne rarissimi casi) perché maggiori sono i membri di una band e maggiori sono i compromessi che bisogna in qualche accettare. E in genere questo ha l'effetto di normalizzare inutilmente il tutto.
Ma lasciamo stare il Dottor Divago (cit: Gianni Clerici) e torniamo a Rise Ye Sunken Ships, un album di indie-rock solido, suonato senza fronzoli e cantato alla grande da Billy McCarthy, una voce che non può lasciare indifferenti, energica e ricca di sfumature. La scrittura dei We Are Augustines è in qualche modo classica (attenzione, potrebbe piacere anche ai fan del classico rock americano, alla Springsteen per intenderci) ma allo stesso tempo fresca e personale.

Finally, a little light in this dark 2012. To be precise this album was released in 2011 but as I listen to it only now, I decide to place it in 2012, so I have something positive to write in this year poor of interesting news. Rise Ye Sunken Ships is the first album by We Are Augustines, or the second album by Pela. The leader Billy McCarthy and Eric Sanderson were in fact part of Pela, with which they also recorded a large part of the Rise Ye Sunken Ships material. But the result did not at all satisfied them so they fired the old fellows, hired drummer Rob Allen and re-recorded everything. And they did the right thing. Try listening to it Anytown Graffiti, Pela's first album, you would find an album with many points of contact with the work of We Are Augustines but with much lower efficiency, less density in music, less impact in sounds and dynamics. This confirms that less is better (except for rare cases) because the more members of a band and the more compromises you have to somehow accept. And in general this has the effect of unnecessarily normalize the whole.
Rise Ye Sunken Ships is an album of solid indie-rock, no-frills played and sung by the great Billy McCarthy, a voice that can not remain indifferent, energetic and rich of shades. We Are Augustines writing is somewhat classic (warning, might also appeal fans of classic American rock, Springsteen fans for instance) but at the same time fresh and personal. This group has something to say and does it very well too: Chapel Song.
