Esistevano ancora i R.E.M.?

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."
This is how R.E.M. announced to the world their break up. But I didn't event think they were already together!
Their brilliant carrer started in 1980 (!) and reached the top 'round 90s with the excellent albums Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People. In 1996 R.E.M. published New Adventures in Hi-Fi: that was a good album and it would have been a perfect time to break up. But it's so hard to make that choice so they went on for further 15 years easily repeating the same formula that gave them success without adding nothing to their story. Finally they gave up and did a great thing, it's by far the better choice, they avoided the risk to became grand-father rockers as The Rolling Stones.
So long, R.E.M.
